Projects 2019

"Let's Be Change Makers!" A research based Project to Act on Climate Change

This project is designed to integrate varied English language  skills and technology. The project is based on the school's vision to support global sustainability.Learners  do the project based on the knowledge they gain through  using WEbquest, a digital platform to conduct research.Tasks are assigned according to learners' multiple inteligences, learning styles, and readiness. In English language Arts Writing Sessions, all learners conduct independent research activities to answer essential questions about climate change. The research findings are categorized in four sections: Why does Climate Change Matter? The shocking facts about the topic. The causes& effects, and the solutions. The suggested solutions include working on recycling plastic bottles to make ECOBRICK to substitute the materials that we get by cutting trees.Learners share their finding to raise awareness of the topic through different mediu: RAP SONG, NEWS BROADCAST, DIGITAL GALLERy, & CAUTIONARY SLOGANS.

All tasks take place through collaborative practices using Microsoft Teams& Microsoft OneNote.

Effects of climate change (Awareness campaign)

The social studies department main goal during  week 2  was to make students aware of the serious effects of climate change and how they are a major threat to our beloved planet Earth! First students were introduced to the effects via videos,PPTs and they were asked to conduct their own researches about global warming and green house gases then create “flipgrid” responses to share the knowledge they've gained. Next, the students were divided into groups based on their multiple intelligences. Each group was responsible for spreading awareness of the effects of climate change in the best way they can express. The 1st group created “Minecraft” projects, the 2nd group produced Artwork, the 3rd group worked on creating online posters and the 4th and final group was responsible for creating and running an Instagram page for spreading awareness. Finally, all students were  brought together to create a fun and engaging climate change awareness song entitled (Our biggest challenge).

During week 2 students didn’t only  become aware of the serious threats of climate change and how it’s affecting us but also, they were able spread awareness and share it with the world. Not to mention, that they have done all that while using skills  to make them succeed in the globalized, knowledge based world of today like Knowledge construction, communication , collaboration , self regulation and use of technology.

Go Figure Big Time: How to use math to solve climate change problem

Overview:

  • Students learn that CO2 is emitted when gasoline is burned, that too much CO2 is causing global warming.
  • Trees absorb CO2 and produce oxygen.
  • Using simple arithmetic to figure the amount of CO2 emissions produced by their own travel, students discover why fuel-efficient cars are more environmentally friendly and consider alternative transportation.
  • Using Minecraft, students will create a model for their school, they will plant trees in the school garden and calculate how much carbon dioxide will the trees absorb from the air.
  • Students will represent their findings using sway.

Objectives:

Students were able to:

  • Describe the impact of cars on air quality.
  • Understand the importance of trees to air quality.
  • Practice basic computation skills.
  •  Apply math skills to create a real-life model that could solve the climate change problem
