What is Climate Change?

This week 2nd and 3rd graders learned about Global Warming and what is the difference between climate and weather. Global Warming is the increase in temperatures in the world. Weather is what happens every day in a specific place and climate is the average weather in a certain place over a long period of time. The Climate is changing everywhere. Our students determined the main causes were: cutting trees, wasting electricity and water; air, land and water pollution; burning fossil fuels and eating animal products.

Effects of Climate Change

The students researched and watched videos and are reading the book "Earth's Fever" and determined the main effects of climate change are: sea levels rising; severe weather (tornadoes/Tsunamis/hurricanes); temperatures rising; ice caps and glaciers melting; animals losing homes or habitats being destroyed; and humans are threatened by poor air quality.

In Italy we are especially in danger because we are a peninsula and our oceans are at risk. There is much pollution and animals are suffering.

What are causes and effects locally?

Here in Italy we have many causes of climate change such as using too many fossil fuels, especially in big cities like Rome and Milan. We also do not recycle properly and so much waste goes into the ocean. The effects are that our pollution level is so high many days the weather forecast says do not go outside to practice sport. Sometimes there is so much pollution on the beach and in the sea and it makes us sad. Also there is a big problem with taking care of our city. They government did not take care of the trees in the city and then they had to cut them down.

What can we do to solve the Climate Change Problem?

We may be small and different but if we work together there's a lot we can do to keep our oceans blue. Italy is a peninsula and most of our country is surrounded by water. Water is as important as trees for our source of oxygen. We must protect our oceans. We eat a lot of fish... sometimes too much. We need to take care of our oceans. We can stop wasting water by turning off the faucet while we wash our hands, brush our teeth and shampoo our hair. We can not throw out water from the filter because it is hot after recess. We can save the planet.
