This is our activity for the week 1

Definitions of climate change. Examine the Concept of turning Waste to Wealth, as Mitigation practices.

Climate change as a gradual alteration of the weather condition that a particular place is acustum to.the causes may be as a result of waste disposal, burning of plastic,car exhaust and green house gas.

Classroom activities on climate change and environmental sustainability for 2021 Climate Action Project.

A group of our social responsibility students introduced the topic of food security under climate change, and also spoke of action and the Earth Project app. 

At the International School of Cape Town we have been looking at various aspects of WASTE. One of our Year 4 learners had the idea to use the paper that gets shredded in the school each day. She took the shredded paper home where she made firelighters. It was interesting and rewarding to see her awareness of the divide between rich and poor in South Africa.  She suggested that the firelighters be shared with people that need to use heat for cooking and as a source of light. She is currently working on another very exciting project where she uses 'waste' paper from our school, so watch this space!!

ISCT has been working on climate change and actions that make a difference. This project we did was to clean up a local beach. This beach is on the edge of an international shipping lane and harbour and so it becomes a collecting point for not only plastics in our oceans but clothes and many other items including dead animals that have wash up or died due to eating the rubbish on our shores. 

This was a whole Keystage activity and lead by myself and our Environmental Portfolio of Year 6's.  We started with the Year 6's thanking everyone who came on their weekend to help us. They educated them on why we are doing this and explained procedures. 

After 3 hours of cleaning up, we loaded 18 black bags full of rubbish into my car to be disposed of correctly. 

Children of all ages came to help. Through action and discussions, they realised how dirty our oceans are. This lead to further discussions with family and friends about what they found and how items like plastic straws should not be used in their homes any longer as it might just find its way into our oceans.

WHAT IS OUR IDEA ON CLIMATE CHANGE ?

1. Climate change as per me can be defined as the change in the atmosphere caused by human activities that lead to releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere causing global warming. Climate change can also be defined as the change in temperature of the atmosphere being too hot or too cold causing harm to the environment. - Tavishi Gupta 
2. Climate change is any sort of change in the environment and its climate. It can be caused due to various reasons, global warming being the greatest one. 

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE LOCALLY ?

1. a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE 

Here are some causes of climate change:- 

1. Rapid Industrialization - When there is rapid increase in population and industrialization it results in deforestation , that releases a lot of carbon dioxide that is harmful for the environment.
2. Pollution - Emission of pollutants can lead to climate change , for example - the mode of transportation we use requires petroleum that is a non-renewable source and releases a lot of carbon dioxide and contributes to climate change.

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE 

Here are some effects of climate change:

1. Loss of wildfire and biodiversity 
2. Land degradation 
3. Rising temperatures / Unpredicting weather patterns 
4. Rising sea levels

What is climate change ? (Abeer)

• Climate is pretty similar to weather. Climate is the weather of a certain place measured over a long period of time. The climate of an area can include seasonal temperatures. rainfall averages and wind patterns. Climates differ from place to place, for example the climate of a desert will be expected to be an arid climate because it has very little water fall during the year. Some other types of climates can be tropical climates which are hot and humid and temperate climates which have warm summers and colder winters. 

What are the Causes of Climate change? (Saanvi)

Human activity is the main cause of climate change.Humans are increasingly influencing the climate and the earth's temperature. Enormous amounts of greenhouse gases to those naturally occurring in the atmosphere, increasing the greenhouse effect and global warming.

• Rapid Industrialization - The rapid population growth associated with industrialization. Larger population leads to increased demand for products, higher levels of production and consumption and, inevitably, elevated levels of greenhouse gases.

• Deforestation - Trees help to regulate the climate by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. When they are cut down, that beneficial effect is lost and the carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse effect.

• Agricultural Practises - Pesticides, fertilizers and other toxic farm chemicals can poison fresh water, marine ecosystems, air and soil. They also can remain in the environment for generations.

• Increasing livestocks - Livestock farming creates a huge carbon footprint and has a very high global warming potential. Livestocks produce large amounts of methane in digestion of their food and waste. Livestock industries create a lot of carbon emissions in the atmosphere

• Transportation - Transport is a major user of energy, and burns most of the world's petroleum. This creates air pollution, including nitrous oxides and particulates, and is a significant contributor to global warming through emission of carbon dioxide.

What is your personal connection to climate change? (Aisha)

• As children, we are the generations that are going to be living and experiencing the future. Therefore, although the affects of climate change might not harm the current adult and older generations, they will harm our futures.
• As students, we have to learn to be conscious of our resources and environment, as we will carry these values onwards and teach others around us to be careful as well to make sure we have lives with a worry free environment.
• Living in a country like India, we have witnessed the sudden increase and change in temperature, as well as the off-season rains and storms that harm our country's agricultural and resource mining industries. These changes are directly impacting the way we live. Therefore if we don’t do something or encourage others to do something about this problem, our lives will keep changing for the worse.

My school is still working online, so I had meeting with children online. We have discussed meaning of climate and weather. We have also discussed causes of climate change in Mumbai. I have introduced about Earth Project app to children and also requested them to join it. I have sent messages on watsapp about joining Earth project app.

Climate Change project What is climate change?

Climate change means a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.

My definition

Climate change happens when the climate in a certain area rapidly changes due to human activity or geological changes.

There are a various causes for climate change. One of them is El-Nino. El nino is a series of changes in the climate affecting parts of the Pacific region every few years. While climate change appears to make big El Niños more frequent, it is also true that El Niños return the favor by giving a short-term stimulus to atmospheric global warming. This is because the spread of warm waters across the tropical Pacific results in a release of heat energy from the oceans into the atmosphere. El Niño causes the Pacific jet stream to move south and spread further east. During winter, this leads to wetter conditions than usual in the Southern U.S. and warmer and drier conditions in the North. El Niño also has a strong effect on marine life off the Pacific coast. Although El Niño's strongest impacts are felt around the equatorial Pacific, they can affect weather around the world by influencing high and low pressure systems, winds and precipitation. And as the warmer ocean waters release excess energy (heat) into the atmosphere, global temperatures rises.

Our understanding

Our young climate warriors at Children's Academy Thakur Complex Mumbai-India were introduced to Climate Action Project through an amazing virtual session which saw the young warriors brainstorming, expressing concerns and sharing their views. They came up with a number of causes and epressed their ideas in form of presentations, posters and video. 

The session was an eye opener for the students.

Our students age group is from 9 years to 14 years.They are divided into 3 main groups.Last year we had selected our own city Dombivali and studied the causes and effects of climate change.This year we have selected two cities from all the four regions of India that is Eastern, Western,Northern and Southern.Students can select any two states/cities from these regions and study the causes and effects of Climate change.They can present their accomplishments in the form of various activities like drawings,posters,slogans, writeup, poem,songs,skit,quiz.

We at RBK International Academy, Mumbai, India conducted several sessions for our students from Grade 4 to Grade 11 on the topics revolving around climate change. Our students participated enthusiastically and have come up with some amazing products. They have made posters, infographics, videos to reflect on their own understanding about climate change and have focussed on local causes of climate change in Mumbai. They plan to work towards mitigating the effects of the causes of a local environmental issue. We also conducted an intraschool workshop where our older students shared their experince about climate change with the younger one's

A Google slide presentation of the brainstorming session conducted with my students on the causes of Climate change. Learners identified the causes and the same was collated on the google presentation. 

In the week one of the project we focused on Birds migration in India due to climate change. We conducted a session with 30 students of our school and asked them to prepare a birdfeeder. The demo was given during the live session about the birdfeeder and later the slides were shared on the whatsApp group.Students were given a weeks time to prepare the birdfeeder from any waste material available at their home. Students were asked to take their selfies with birdfeeder and share on the group. Also students were asked to click the snaps if they find any birds flocking around their bird feeders. The best click were announced prizes!!

Climate change, also called global warming, refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. An overwhelming scientific consensus maintains that climate change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air.

Climate change describes a change in the average conditions — such as temperature and rainfall — in a region over a long period of time. For example, 20,000 years ago, much of the United States was covered in glaciers. In the United States today, we have a warmer climate and fewer glaciers.

Global climate change refers to the average long-term changes over the entire Earth. These include warming temperatures and changes in precipitation, as well as the effects of Earth’s warming, such as:

• Rising sea levels
• Shrinking mountain glaciers
• Ice melting at a faster rate than usual in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic
• Changes in flower and plant blooming times.

Earth’s climate has constantly been changing — even long before humans came into the picture. However, scientists have observed unusual changes recently. For example, Earth’s average temperature has been increasing much more quickly than they would expect over the past 150 years.

Climate change refers to the change in the environmental conditions  of the earth. This happens due to many internal and external factors. The climatic change has become a global concern over the last few decades. Besides, these climatic changes affect life on the earth in various ways. These climatic changes are having various impacts on the ecosystem  and ecology. Due to these changes, a number of species of plants and animals have gone .we started researching on climate change and came to know that the earth temperature is rising due to a phenomenon called the greenhouse effect. The warming up of earth surface causes many like ozone depletion, affect on agriculture, water supply, transportation and several other problems.

Climate change refers to the change in the environmental conditions of the earth. This happens due to many internal and external factors. The climatic change has become a global concern over the last few decades. Besides, these climatic changes affect life on the earth in various ways.

When Did it Start?

The climate started changing a long time ago due to human activities but we came to know about it in the last century. During the last century, we started noticing the climatic change and its effect on human life. We started researching on climate change and came to know that the earth temperature is rising due to a phenomenon called the greenhouse effect. The warming up of earth surface causes many ozone depletion, affect our agriculture, water supply, transportation, and several other problems.

Although there are hundreds of reason for the climatic change we are only going to discuss the natural and manmade (human) reasons.

Climate change is basically rise in temperature due to some human Activities like slash and burn, overuse of fossil fuel. 

 My self Nishu Joshi from S.T.S World School ( Rajgomal) (Punjab). This year our entire school and my class are participating in the Climate Action Project. Me and my entire class are very excited about this project.In the first week, students are telling about climate action through charts. Students are telling about the importance of climate action in a very good way. I hope that we will complete this entire project with full dedication and enthusiasm. As per week 1 activities, our focus was on generating awareness and getting more information related to climate change. This task was taken on different levels, and students were asked to be as creative as possible. You will find that students have used poems, storyboards, videos, PowerPoint presentations etc. to show the causes of climate change and share the impact of climate change on their lives. We live in Uttarakhand, which has seen a lot of natural disasters in the past decade or so. We used it as the main topic of discussion. In the first week of climate action project students researched the causes of climate change and depicted through Comic strips, story boards and video presentations. Students also have collaborated with a brazilian school and shared their work.

The students were divided into 5 teams and each week the teams did brainstorming on the topic and came up with a presentation. The elder students were made the team leaders and the younger ones discussed with their team leaders about the topic. So along with climate action plan they are also developing skills like collaboration, leadership qualities, teamwork and above all taking onus  of their work and action.

This is our first time to join Climate Action Project and our students are studying for entrance examinations to universities, so I was a bit worried about students involvement and attitudes toward this project.  However, they are really enjoying doing the project.

Since our place still under Movement Control Order, so our class of Climate Change is conducted through online. For our first class I gave them some reading materials and websites they could find infromation on Climate Change. At the end of class they were required to answer online quiz. They are also required to do some homework of drawing posters.

What is climate change - what will be your definition?

Climate change is the global weather and climatic conditions caused by global warming due to the greenhouse effect contributed by the greenhouse gases.

What is causing climate change locally?

The causes of climate change locally are burning fossil fuel such as coal, oil and gas which produces carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. The main cause of climate change is greenhouse gases. The second cause is deforestation that disturbs the C02 balance in the atmosphere. Livestock farming produces methane gases from the animal waste. Next is the use of air conditioning systems, refrigerator systems, solvents and aerosol propellents. Fertilizers also contributes towards the emission of nitrous gases.

My first group of students are from 2 Dalton. There are 5 of them: Akif, Bernice, Kay Venn and Shakira. 

They each have their own view of climate change and have tried to explain it briefly in the slides. They have even outlined some of the common causes and effects of climate change towards the environment and humans. 

We are doing online quizzes regarding the climate change and spreading the information about it to our friends and families. 

Natural climate variability occurs in parallel with climate change . Therefore, these natural fluctuations must also be taken into account when planning for the future.

Climate change is the change in the weather conditions on Earth for a prolonged period. Since the past few years, the Earth's temperature has been increasing faster than ever before.

So how did that happen? Our Earth has a specific way of maintaining its temperature through the right mix of greenhouse gases. When there is a problem with the balance of greenhouse gases generated, they are settled higher in the atmosphere. As a result, sunlight that is reflected back into space is usually absorbed by existing greenhouse gases and reflected back toward Earth.

 Year 7 students were introduced to climate change and discussed what happens to our global home if we do not change our activities. They drew what they felt.

Climate is changing!

It is time to raise awareness for climate change.

We work and study at a vocational high school which is located in the industrial area in Eskişehir, Turkey. Therefore, we want to inform employers and employees in this zone  as an action for this project because factories and industries have a huge effect on climate change.

This presentation is prepared by Elif Sena Altıntaş, a student of Ahmet Erdem Anatolian High School, from Turkey. She wrote both objective facts and her own thoughts.

Climate change; is one of the most important environmental and economic problems of our age, and it is a very complex problem that creates negative effects on every aspect of life from health to agriculture, especially in the geography where we are. All human beings, earth creatures and unfortunately future generations are directly or indirectly at risk.

Our project is concerned with the problems of climate change as well as an unlimited use of resources. Our objective is to focus our students’ attention and awareness on practical environmental matters. On this basis they will be able to change their own environmental attitudes, behaviour and motivate others in their peer groups or families.

The ocean plays a central role in regulating the Earth’s climate. Atmospheric warming is leading to the melting of inland glaciers and ice, causing rising sea levels with significant impacts on shorelines. CO2 emissions are also making the ocean more acidic. Our youngest participants  are going to try to make the present generation aware of this and find few solutions we could share with everyone to make the earth a better place to live on. 

Weather reflects short-term conditions of the atmosphere while climate is the average daily weather for an extended period of time at a certain location. ... Weather can change from minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and season-to-season. A climate is the average weather in a given area over a period of time. The weather, on the other hand, can change drastically in a matter of hours. Changing the world takes thousands of years. It is, however, complex and has been growing at an alarming rate in recent years.

Weather refers to how the environment behaves, mostly in terms of its impacts on life and human habits. Temperature, humidity, precipitation, brightness, cloudiness, visibility, wind, and atmospheric pressure all are factors that influence the weather on a daily basis.

Students at BTH campus of Vietnam Australia International School are so excited to present this topic. At present, my students are having online lessons because of Covid-19. Therefore, my students recorded their presentation through MS Teams or YouTube. We hope to come back to school soon to collaborate together to carry out this project more effectively.

Week 1

Introduction: 

• What is climate change - what would be your definition?

.Me and my Puplis built a website especially for the project in which we summarized the causes of climate change

For the last 2 weeks we have studied the difference between climate and weather. We checked reliable sources for information to discover the causes of climate change. As a class we concluded that the meaning of climate change is: a change in the usual patterns of climate in specific places. 
We worked in groups to make posters and created a box for the classroom to put all our research in. We thought pollution, wasting water and electricity and not recycling were the biggest causes of climate change. We were surprised to learn that eating meat and overfishing are even bigger causes. 

After a brief description and viewing of the videos on the difference between time and climate, we focused on the causes of climate change by dividing them into 2 types: natural ones, which occur in nature and human ones, that is, which depend on wrong human habits.

With the students we tried to define what climate change consists of and how it impacts on biodiversity.

The students introduced themselves by creating an eco bit moji. This was followed by a short video introducing climate change, which we discussed later. They presented their conclusions on climate change through drawings and the creation of a common hammer. All this was exhibited in the section on eco-activities which is located in the school hall.

In the first week of the project we discussed with the students What are climate change? Then each of the students drew a drawing on Climate Change through our eyes. The students also created their own eco avatars in the Bitmoji tool with which they introduced themselves.

20.9.2021-We called today's activity "Extraordinary class hour - climate actions". Through the Microsoft Teams platform, 10 students were included in the class and a video was played on the occasion of the Protection of the Ozone Layer, from which the students were introduced to this issue.

22.9.2021-We called today's activity "Cycling in our neighborhood". On the occasion of International Car Free Day, the students and I came to school with our bicycles as mentors (as we usually do). In addition, we drove together to the picnic area next to the church of St. Spas near the school. We did a vacation there, a short lecture on climate change and what is our contribution to that problem. Then, safely in a column, obeying the bicycle traffic rules, we returned to the school yard.

After an hour of friendship, this meeting ended.

During the first week, the students have been understanding the difference between weather and climate; they drew the Earth; we created a word cloud about the causes of climate change  (Word Art); students played a quiz in Kahoot and successfully finished the game about climate change; they researched about climate change and causes of climate change in our county.

Учениците исто така создадоа свои еко аватари во алатката Битмоџи со кои се претставија.

It is known the fact that the Earth is now reaching new and new records in terms of climate changes, often radical and accompanied by violent weather and conditions that bring only damages doing life more and more harder. Together with our students we identified the causes, and create a poster about it.
